Heat Pumps vs Furnaces—What’s the Difference?

Heating is one of the most important parts of your home – it is essential to stay warm and comfortable. You should make sure to research types of heating systems before buying them because each has its own specific pros and cons. Not all heating systems are made equally. One question professionals at Aire One Heating and Cooling are often asked is if it is better to get a heat pump or a furnace.

What are the differences between heat pumps vs. furnaces? It’s not an easy question to answer, and the best way to understand the difference is to look at each one and then make a comparison.

1. What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is a device that transfers thermal energy from a low-temperature reservoir, usually at ground level, to a high-temperature reservoir, usually at roof level. It can be used in homes or commercial buildings that have space for two reservoirs of different temperatures, and it typically uses an outside source of low-temperature water and a compressor to transfer the thermal energy from the reservoir to the building. Heat pumps are used primarily in places where there is no natural process for cooling or heating a building. They transfer energy between two sources of differing temperatures, relying on the law of thermodynamics and conservation of mass/energy to do so efficiently. A heat pump in Ontario will definitely keep you warm.

2. What is a furnace?

A furnace is a device used to heat up and provide hot air or thermal energy, which can remove excess moisture, carbon dioxide, and other gases emitted by combustion. Furnaces are typically made out of metal and they have a chimney at one end which allows for the release of combustion gases. These types of furnaces use either wood, coal, gas, oil, or electricity as their fuel source. In Canada, furnaces are used in residential heating systems and commercial heating systems. A furnace in Ontario will also be an excellent way of making it through another Canadian winter.

3. Difference between a heat pump and a furnace?

Heat pumps are designed to transfer heat away from the air in your home. They can be installed in your attic, crawl space, or under the floor. They can also be used in summer to do just the opposite - extracting warm air out of a room to cool a place down. A furnace is designed to transfer heat into the air in your home by producing hot air by burning fuel like oil, gas, or wood.

Aire One Heating & Cooling offers homeowners across Ontario furnace installation and heat pump installation.  While some people prefer to have a heat pump in Toronto for both summer and winter, others think a furnace is a good way to heat the house during the cold winter.
